ISTAT Foundation Internship Program Spotlight: Sophie McAuley

How did you find out about the ISTAT Foundation Internship Program?

I became aware of the ISTAT Foundation Internship Program online, although I had heard about the Foundation on multiple occasions from peers and through industry events. Personally, my MBA syllabus included a practical training element, which made involvement in this program a perfect complement to my in-classroom learning.  I had the privilege of securing a placement during my undergraduate degree and knew the long-lasting benefits of experiential learning. 

What was the application and interview process like?

The recruitment process was straightforward, with helpful information and step-by-step updates. Matching my skillset and interests with the open positions on the Portal was probably the most time-consuming stage and required careful thought and consideration.

What advice do you have for students who are looking for internships through the ISTAT Foundation Internship Program?

If a role catches your eye, I suggest thoroughly researching the company through its website and other platforms. Try reaching out to a current team member on LinkedIn. If that isn’t an option, read a testimonial or review from clients or talent who know them best. Employees’ positive brand experience speaks volumes about the brand’s internal strength and demonstrates an organization’s commitment to upholding expectations. I strongly recommend the Foundation’s Internship Program to students or others in this position and consider the wide range of opportunities available through ISTAT and other industry organizations. What starts as an internship could lead to a permanent position post-graduation.

What skills or major takeaways do you have from your internship?

Hands-on experience is critical to the professional development of graduates, students, and young professionals. The opportunity to think on your feet and apply textbook learning in practice is invaluable. Zeevo Group encouraged me to observe, shadow, and ask questions, which meant not fearing failure and making the most of the problem-solving and creating thinking process. The idea that prospective or future employers would potentially favor internship experience furthered my desire to secure a position despite the challenge of juggling both school and work. In a competitive job market, one mustn’t underestimate on-the-job training.

Do you feel your internship has prepared you for a career in aviation?

Being an intern is usually the first introduction to a client, so first impressions are important and set the tone for a longer-term-oriented business relationship. Not only has this internship allowed me to build my professional network in the aviation space and meet new contacts, but it has given me access to industry events, conferences, and relevant training. I was fortunate to pursue my interest in the field and be excited for new tasks and different projects each day – from project management to creative and communication services. Zeevo Group has created an environment that promotes professional development and growth through autonomy and self-direction. Furthermore, they care their professionals are passionate about their work, mirrored in the quality of the team’s project delivery and client service.

How did the support from the ISTAT Foundation help you as an intern?

The Foundation has proven to be a committed resource at an uncertain time in the labor market. During the pandemic, they were always an e-mail or phone call away with various tools and sign-posting services available. This unwavering support was reassuring, particularly as a remote internship requires enhanced communication, performance-focused learning, and customized coaching. Now that my internship has concluded, I am involved with ISTAT in a member capacity, indicating my advocacy of the organization and its meaningful work. I want to thank both Zeevo Group and the ISTAT Foundation for the opportunity to enhance my professional path through the Foundation’s purposeful initiatives, events, and programs.
